I have loved sarcastic fringeheads ever since I saw David Attenborough’s take on these pugnacious critters. Admittedly a lot of it is the name; I think I’m in agreement with Dr. Milton Love when he says “Sarcastic fringehead, sarcastic fringehead…I love that name so much. Sarcastic fringehead. A good name for a rock group, a good name for a video game company, heck, a good name for a massage parlor.”* But they’re also just really outstanding fish with their take-no-prisoners attitudes, giant terrifyingly technicolor mouths, and a willingness to put both to good use at the same time when defending their homes. I mean, they don’t look like much when you first encounter them, but these really are little undersea dragons (at least 10d12+20, in my humble opinion.)
